Laparotomy sponges, often referred to as "lap sponges" or abdominal pads, are sterile, highly absorbent cotton pads used during major surgical procedures, particularly in abdominal surgery. In the current global healthcare landscape, the demand for high-quality surgical consumables is skyrocketing, driven by an aging population and the increasing frequency of complex surgical interventions.
The global laparotomy sponges market is projected to witness significant growth. Hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) are the primary consumers, prioritizing sponges that offer maximum absorbency and safety features such as X-ray detectable filaments.
Modern manufacturing is shifting towards 100% pure cotton materials with lint-free properties. Innovation is now focused on RFID-enabled sponges to prevent "Retained Surgical Items" (RSI), a critical safety protocol in modern ORs.
Global medical procurement officers are increasingly looking towards integrated manufacturers in China who can provide OEM/ODM services while maintaining rigorous CE and ISO 13485 certifications.
As a leading hub for medical textile production, China offers unparalleled advantages in the manufacturing of laparotomy sponges. Our facility, Nanjin Seeker Medical Co., Ltd., exemplifies these strengths through advanced automation and stringent quality control.
Used to absorb blood and fluids during laparotomy procedures, providing a clear field of vision for the surgeon while protecting internal organs.
High absorbency is critical in trauma units to manage heavy bleeding rapidly. Our sponges are designed for rapid fluid intake.
Essential in C-sections and other pelvic surgeries where fluid management and sterile barrier maintenance are paramount.
Established in May of 2004, Nanjin Seeker Medical Co., Ltd. is a professional manufacturer specialized in research, development, production of surgical sutures and surgical needles, All of our products comply with international and interior quality standards, and are approved Production license, CE, ISO13485, ISO14001, ISO45001cerificates.

We insist on the quality policy of modern techniques, excellent quality, customers satisfaction. We attach great importance to the development and application of new technology, so far, we have obtained 29 new invention patents, we have realized the automatic transformation of the production process. For decades, laparotomy sponges have been a staple in operating rooms worldwide. Initially developed as simple gauze squares, the modern laparotomy sponge is a marvel of medical textile engineering. At Nanjin Seeker Medical, we have witnessed the evolution from manual folding to high-speed automated production lines that ensure each sponge is uniform, sterile, and free from loose fibers.
The primary material used is USP grade cotton, which must undergo a rigorous bleaching process using hydrogen peroxide rather than chlorine to ensure no toxic residues remain. This is crucial for internal surgical applications where any chemical trace could lead to patient complications or tissue irritation.
Hospital procurement managers today face unprecedented challenges, from supply chain disruptions to tightening regulatory requirements. Sourcing from a reliable Chinese manufacturer like Seeker Medical provides a buffer against these uncertainties. By maintaining a large inventory of raw materials and leveraging our 20 years of manufacturing experience, we ensure a steady supply of surgical sponges to Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.
One of the most critical features of a high-quality laparotomy sponge is the X-ray detectable element. This is usually a blue barium sulfate monofilament or a dual-check ribbon woven into the sponge. In the event of a sponge count discrepancy during surgery, these filaments allow the surgical team to locate the sponge using radiological equipment. Our production process ensures that these filaments are securely bonded, preventing them from detaching during heavy fluid saturation.
Safety starts with sterilization. Most laparotomy sponges are sterilized using Ethylene Oxide (EO) gas, which effectively penetrates the thick layers of cotton without damaging the fibers. Some regions prefer Gamma radiation. At Seeker Medical, our facilities are equipped to handle diverse sterilization needs, validated by our ISO 13485 quality system. Each batch is tracked with biological indicators to guarantee 100% sterility before it reaches the hospital.
Not all sponges are created equal. The "Ply" refers to the number of layers, while "GSM" (Grams per Square Meter) measures the density of the fabric. A 12-ply sponge is standard, but for procedures involving heavy hemorrhaging, a 16-ply or 20-ply sponge is preferred for its superior wicking capability. Our R&D team works closely with surgeons to optimize the weave pattern, ensuring the sponge can hold up to 10 times its weight in fluid while remaining structural enough for organ retraction.
The industry is moving toward "Smart Surgery." RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags embedded in laparotomy sponges are becoming the new standard in premium markets. These allow for instantaneous counting via a scanner, reducing the risk of human error in the OR. While traditional sponges remain the volume leader, we are continuously upgrading our machinery to integrate these digital safety features into our future product lines.
